Gianni Bolongaro described the activity of La Marrana Arteambientale and the inception of the "Premio PAALMA (Premio Artista + Architetto La Marrana Arteambientale)" prize.

In 1996, Grazia and Gianni Bolongaro founded La Marrana Arteambientale at their home in Montemarcello (Ameglia-La Spezia). This association commissions international artists every year to create art works that focus on the relationship between the work itself and the environment.
The foundation of La Marrana was prompted by the desire to open a new kind of space for philosophical reflection that would be different from a museum or gallery. Its purpose is to establish a specific link with the environment (in this case, the Montemarcello-Magra Regional Park) and with the memories and stimuli that the environment can generate. Through the intervention of an artist, a "space" can be transformed into a "place." In this sense, art has a function similar to amorous sentiment, paraphrasing the verses of "Sommer" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (from the collection "Vier Jahrezeiten"): "The fields and the woods and the rocks / and the gardens have always been / just a space for me / and you, my love, transform them / into a place."
After 10 years of activity and the contributions of more than 15 artists, reflection on the relationship between art and the environment has expanded beyond the confines of the Park to encompass the urban context in general.
In that sense, this conference can be considered the continuation of the conference held at Artefiera in 2007 (with Alessandro Mendini, Beppe Finessi, Alberto Garutti and Enzo Cucchi, organised by Giacinto Di Pietrantonio), with the participation of Jes Fernie, editor of the volume Two Minds: Artists and Architects in Collaboration (published by Black Dog Publishing, 2006), which surveys and documents instances of international collaboration between artists and architects. The purpose of the Bologna conference was to cultivate the interest of public entities in projects realised in public spaces as authentic creative works and the collaboration of artists and architects on projects.
Next year the Premio PAALMA will draw on a network of finders located in different countries and an international jury that will select the work designed by an artist and architect to be awarded the trophy sculpted by Enzo Cucchi, specifically chosen to symbolise the PAALMA Prize. The international finder network and jury will ensure greater continuity for this innovative design and collaboration process.
